Safety Gear

Suit up!

If you don't have the proper safety gear you can't race. Every kart racing club/organization has requirements for driver safety gear. This information can be found in the club RULES.

Following is a general overview to go racing!

Note: The items selected for this document are just representative.

 

 

 

Helmet
A full face helmet with full coverage, designed for competitive motorsports is required. Helmets with the following 2005 and newer Snell & SFI specifications are approved;

1.1 Snell 2005 SA and M, & Snell 2005 K.............................Legal until 12/20/16
1.2 Snell CMS 2007 & CMR 2007 (youth helmet)..............Legal until 12/20/16
1.3 Snell M 2010, & SA 2010..................................................Legal until 12/20/21
1.4 SFI 24.1, & SFI 24.1/2005 (youth helmet)....................Legal until 12/20/16
1.5 SFI 31.2a, SFI 41.2a, SFI31.1/2005, & SFI 41.1/2005....Legal until 12/20/16
1.6 SFI 24.1/2010 (youth helmet)........................................Legal until 12/20/21
1.7 SFI 31.1/2010, & 41.1/2010..............................................Legal until 12/20/21

Neck Collars
Neck Collars or neck rolls are required (collar-type neck brace designed for motorsports).

Driver Suit
Drivers shall wear: Jackets of heavyweight leather, heavyweight vinyl, ballistic nylon material or other abrasion resistant material and full length pants to prevent or minimize abrasions. Driver suits designed for go kart racing is highly recommended.

Kid Kart & Cadet drivers must wear a chest protection device with a SFI certification of 20.1.

Rib protectors are highly advised and especially so in the high speed classes.

Gloves
Gloves are required. karting specific gloves typically have a long cuff and are textured in the grip zones.

Racing Shoes
Socks and high top shoes are required. It is highly recommended to use karting specific shoes. Typically, karting specific shows have high tops, a wide Velcro strap to secure the shoe and laces, and a skid bottom sole to help them slide across the pavement.
